The Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park lies in the north-eastern section of Baden-Württemberg, near the state capital of Stuttgart. With a surface area of approximately 1270 km² (789 miles²), it covers the area between the cities of Backnang, Beilstein, Öhringen, Schwäbisch Hall, Aalen, Schwäbisch Gmünd und Schorndorf. Around 170,000 people live in the area. The altitude varies from 200m above sea level in the Sulm Valley to 586m near Gschwend and Großerlach. The climate varies from a mild climate in the wine provinces with a yearly average temperature of 9° C and a mean annual precipitation of 800mm, to a cool and damp climate in the higher regions, with a yearly average temperature of 7.5° C and a mean annual precipitation of 1100mm.
